NYPrepTutors First to Introduce Khan Academy Videos to Students

Khan Academy, the wildly popular international teaching tool that was recently featured on 60 Minutes, now will be finding its way into more New York students’ homes thanks to NY Prep Tutors.

The company is announcing today that, effective immediately, they will be incorporating video lessons from the educational Web site into their math and science tutoring sessions. Their tutors, who are all equipped with laptops or tablet computers, will access the Khan Academy site during tutoring sessions to help elucidate complex concepts and to supplement their other teaching materials. Students will be assigned videos from Khan Academy for homework in addition to their regular reading and problems from printed materials.

Khan Academy has been hailed around the world as the future of education. Created in 2006 by MIT and Harvard Business School alumnus Salman Khan and recently featured on 60 Minutes, the site supplies a free online collection of more than 3,100 micro lectures via streaming video tutorials. The lectures cover diverse topics ranging from mathematics, history, healthcare and medicine, and finance to physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, economics, cosmology, and organic chemistry, plus American civics, art history, microeconomics and computer science.

“We encourage all our students and their parents to take advantage of this terrific free resource,” says the firm’s director, Hooman Dilmanian, “This summer, NY Prep Tutors planning to start volunteering for the site by contributing video lectures of our own.”

The firm intends to implement the video series immediately into its SAT Tutor program in New York and Long Island and Chemistry Tutor programs in New York and Long Island

A few years ago, I found a link on Metafilter to a free program for quickly designing websites. The user would sketch rough pages and draw in some connections, and the program would dynamically generate a working version of that page. I remember that it was designed specifically to work on tablet computers and that it was free; I think its name might have started with a D and was one fairly short word. I uninstalled it by mistake and have been regretting it ever since. Do you know the program I’m talking about? And if not, do you know of a similar one, hopefully also free?
